Linux Distribucije

Distribucija je operativni sustav nastao na Linux kernelu, te je dio velike UNIX obitelji. Budući da se sa samom Linux jezgrom ne bi se moglo napraviti puno toga, dodaje se grafičko sučelje (X-Windows), razni programi, alati i sl., čime nastaje distribucija Linuxa. Distribucije se mogu nazvati i kompilacijama, jer su upravo to - kompilacije najrazličitijeg softvera, a tvore cjelokupan i funkcionalan operacijski sustav spreman za korištenje na svim oblicima računala.

Danas postoji više od 300 raznih distribucija i novi korisnik jednostavno mora proći kroz fazu odabira one distribucije koja će mu najbolje "sjesti". Svaka od njih ima svojstvene sposobnosti, mogućnosti i postavke, te rad sa softverskim paketima. Najbolje je odabir početi od onih najpopularnijih, a tek onda tražiti nešto drugo... 

Najpopularnije distribucije
Najpopularnije distribucije obično karakterizira velika zajednica iz čega proizlazi i dobra podrška:

• bogata dokumentacija, posvećeno im je puno web stranica, foruma, portala i sl.,
  
• mnogo paketiranog softvera u repozitorijima,
  
• u pravilu bolja podrška za hardver.
  

Dakako, postoje i iznimke poput Gentoo i Arch Linuxa, koji imaju jako bogatu i kvalitetnu dokumentaciju, iako ne spadaju u najpopularnije distribucije.

Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based distribution whose goal is to provide a more complete out-of-the-box experience by including browser plugins, media codecs, support for DVD playback, Java and other components. The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system. This operating system is called Debian GNU/Linux, or simply Debian for short. The Fedora Project is an openly-developed project designed by Red Hat, open for general participation, led by a meritocracy, following a set of project objectives. Xubuntu is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu. Unlike its parent, however, Xubuntu uses the light-weight Xfce desktop environment and is optimised for lower-end machines. The distribution includes only GTK+ applications where possible.

Kubuntu is a free, user-friendly Linux distribution based on KDE's desktop software and on the award-winning Ubuntu operating system. It has a biannual release cycle and at least 18 months of free security updates for each release. antiX is a fast, lightweight and easy-to-install Linux live CD distribution based on Debian's "Testing" branch for x86 compatible systems. antiX offers users the "antiX Magic" in an environment suitable for old computers. The goal of antiX is to provide a light, but fully functional and flexible free operating system for both newcomers and experienced users of Linux.
